Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage shares many of the goals of regular massage – to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility, and just make you feel good. But it’s also tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies, and therapists who are trained in prenatal massage adjust their techniques accordingly.

We began teaching prenatal massage to the spring class this evening. Now we are looking for some pregnant ladies to practice on. The practice will be on July 1 in the evening. We have a 6 PM or 7:30 PM appointment available and we need 4 ladies. The cost is

free. Please call Jenny Grove at 765-425-4119 to get scheduled.

Techniques for helping

We have been teaching some advanced massage techniques so that our students can help those who live with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome, or a collection of symptoms characterized by fascial pain and generalized feelings of malaise. The symptoms can vary from person to person and there could be chronic fatigue involved. Most people that are diagnosed have tender points in specific areas of the body in the amount of 11-18 and in all four quadrants of the body. The syndrome can be very debilitating but can be controlled with proper nutrition, exercise, and supplements. Some rheumatologists will prescribe pain medication, thyroid medication or suggest that the patient receive massage. Massage can help by loosening the fascial layer of tissue, releasing the muscles and ameliorating the inflammation which can be a cause of some of the pain and swelling in the tissues.

Fibromyalgia Clinic

Tomorrow, December 7th we will be hosting a clinic for persons living with fibromyalgia. The clinic is free and the students will be working with the individual people as well as sharing the clients so that they can learn the differences in experience for persons with this syndrome. I hope we can make a difference for the people who attend the clinic.

New Spring Class

The spring 2014 class starts March 15th. The first day is orientation and testing. The next day, the 16th is the first day of class and the class will meet Monday evenings as well. 2014 promises to be a busy year for the school. I am excited to have the school doing so well. I think we are on track because we spend so much time teaching massage techniques and we really strive to teach the students how to help clients overcome problems. We teach Spa and other massage modalities that are just for relaxation but I believe our students can do more than just relax the client. We teach NMT, MET and some basics of many other deep tissue modalities. Call Aurora for a Spring 2014 catalog at 765-610-0707.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am so grateful for everything and every person in my life. It is so nice to be close to family and friends. At the school we are hosting a free fibromyalgia clinic for persons suffering from fibromyalgia. If you know someone who has it please have them contact me. The date is December 7th and we have times available all day.

Here we are again

Here we are at thanksgiving once more. I have been making a concerted effort to be more thankful this year. I have many things to be thankful for but I am especially thankful for my students. I have some great people attending the school. They are all people that I am glad I have gotten to know.
I love teaching massage and they are dedicated learners!
I have gotten into the habit of being thankful each day for everything and I can say it has made me happier than I have ever been in my life.
I am thankful to have the wonderful bunch of clients that I have, I love all of them, they make my life special.
Our daughter came to live with us this year, she brought her kids back into our lives full time, I can’t imagine life without them here now.
My husband is a good partner and a great friend, I am thankful for him most of all. He’s the grandpa to my grandma being on board to help out with the little guys, he’s the best!

We are using the skeleton for a trade school kinesiology class. The students are palpating the boney landmarks and modeling muscles onto the skeleton with modeling clay. The landmarks are easily palpable and the students have a renewed interest in the subject.

Finally!

Whew it was hard to get back to this, looks like I have been busy for months. I am planning an open house for Northern Lights School of Massage on May 11. I have had one this year and one student signed up. We will have room for 3 more then that’s it. I have enjoyed teaching again when there are fewer students . The students are hand picked by me and I try to get to know them a bit before they come to school and are accepted.

One of the really good things about NLSM is that we try to give the students a bit of information about several deep tissue modalities, not just one. It helps the student to figure out what they want to become certified in or take further classes in as continuing education. Today we worked with MET.

That is Muscle Energy Technique. We use a resistance to achieve the muscle release.

Spring will be here in just a few short weeks, enjoy the spring flowers!
